A Legacy of Care
For over thirty five years, Inspiritus, formerly Lutheran Services of Georgia and Lutheran Services in Tennessee, has promoted programs that enhance the stability, wellness, health, and safety of individuals and families. Since our founding in 1981, we have touched the lives of more than 100,000 individuals. Please see some key dates in our history below.
1979 – The Sunbelt Resource Mobilization Project is launched by Lutheran Services in America (formerly Lutheran Social Service System (LS/3) focused on developing social ministry services in the Sunbelt).
1981 – 18 congregations met and incorporated Lutheran Ministries of Georgia – Atlanta. The agency opened its doors on July 1, 1981, at the Lutheran Center in Atlanta. The first Executive Director was the Rev. Henry Wohlgemuth who came to Atlanta from Lutheran Children and Family Service of Eastern Pennsylvania.
Four basic functions were established. Assistance to Congregations and Associations of Congregations, Refugee Resettlement and Follow-on Services, Resource Development, Communications and Advocacy.
1994 – Programs are expanded to Savannah and Augusta.
2003 – Lutheran Ministries of Georgia becomes Lutheran Services of Georgia (LSG).
Programs are expanded to Albany area.
2012 – LSG moves its offices to 100 Edgewood Avenue to accommodate a statewide, mobile workforce and oversight of six program platforms statewide: Refugee Services, Immigration Services, FACES (residential programs for individuals with developmental disabilities), Specialized Foster Care, and Family Intervention Services.
2017- LSG moves its Atlanta offices to 230 Peachtree St.
2018- LSG expands in Disaster Response program to offer case management services and opens its Financial Opportunity Center in Clarkston.
2019- LSG joins forces with Lutheran Services in Tennessee and changes its name to Inspiritus.
