HOW ONE FOSTER MOM’S LOVE HELPED THE CHILDREN IN HER CARE

Tristan and River spent the early years of their life living in deplorable conditions. Their birth parents suffered severe substance abuse addictions. The two boys (ages 14 and 4) survived by eating out of trash bins and taking care of each other with little to no adult guidance or supervision. This was especially challenging since Tristan and River are both non-verbal and have been diagnosed with autism.

When an Inspiritus caseworker was made aware of their situation, our team worked incessantly to pair Tristan and River with the foster parent best suited to meet their needs.

Yoeshikoe is a foster mom who had previous experience dealing with children experiencing severe behavioral challenges. She opened her Atlanta home to Tristan and River and quickly began to work tirelessly to find a school that could enroll and support them.

This proved to be a challenge since both boys are developmentally delayed, have self-inflicting behaviors, and had been kicked out of programs that could not accommodate their special needs. There is also a lengthy investigative process required when enrolling children who have had little or no schooling. Yoeshikoe proved to be extremely good at advocating on Tristan and River’s behalf. With her constant attention and dedication, the boys are now enrolled in school and thriving under her care and supervision.

“Being able to care for, embrace and love a child, means the world to me. My foster kids may not have the ability to say I love you back, but they outwardly show gratitude in so many ways! My mother wasn’t a loving mother. I always desired to know how a mother’s love felt. I may never know how it feels but when I look into my children’s eyes, it shows that they know how it feels to be loved by a mother. I am the loving mother that I never had.” -Yoeshikoe
